Nigeria’s nascent tourism industry can be likened to the country itself: having diverse and chiefly unrealised potential, a landscape rich in cultural heritage and history. Both are unmistakeable uncut diamonds of opportunity and investment. All the raw components are there, from the 800 km of sandy beaches on the coast, to the tropical coastal plain inland, the mangrove swamps of the Niger delta, to the south eastern forest belt. Savanna grasslands cover the central regions and further North the geography changes to hot, semi-arid bushland. These varied locations contain incredible waterfalls, mountain ranges, wetlands, National Parks and World Heritage sites. Nigeria is home to more than 250 ethnic groups, each with its own legacy and customs. It is colourful, vibrant and hospitable.
Why then is the Nigerian Tourism Industry contributing just 5% of the GDP, and only 4.6% of this vast nation’s employment? (figures: World Travel & Tourism Council). Undoubtedly one of the main reasons is the country’s unfortunate history of decades of civil war and corruption, a legacy that has resulted in widespread poverty and a sadly neglected infrastructure.
