Telecoms goes from strength to strength
The Nigerian telecoms industry is one of the country’s major success stories. Governed by the independent regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the industry has thrived on the back of increased investment and dynamic growth in the mobile sector. Teledensity has grown from 0.73% in 2001 to 39.45% calculated by active subscribers in August 2008, and calculated by installed capacity, 80% in October 2008. Investment in telecoms has amounted to more than USD11 billion between 2001 and 2008, and the market value of the sector is projected to hit USD10 billion by 2010.The independent regulator that oversees the telecoms sector, the NCC, was established in 1992, but it was the inauguration of the current board of the NCC under Ernest Ndukwe in 2000 that saw the NCC begin to fulfil its promise as a dynamic actor in the sector. ...
