Transport Safety

Improving transport safety brings economic and social benefits

Nigeria, like other developing countries, has borne the economic and human costs of inadequate transport safety standards. But coordinated efforts to bring the safety of the country’s transport systems into line with international best practices are under way, and have already brought about marked improvements.

Safer on the road

Road crashes are the second leading cause of death for people between the ages of 5 and 44 in African countries, and Nigeria has averaged 4000 fatalities a year from road crashes over the past 20 years. The economic cost of this human suffering is high, costing the country around 2% of GDP due to loss of members of the workforce as well as the burden on health services and infrastructure. But with the help of international and regional partners, Nigeria is making strides in bringing safety to its roads.

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) was established in 1988 to deal with the task of bringing road accidents down. The agency is recognised in Africa as one of the continent’s most successful bodies in its field – both Tanzania and the Republic of Niger sought assistance from the FRSC in setting up their own road safety organisations.
