Transport Overview

Upgrading for the twenty-first century

Transport infrastructure inadequate to the needs of a twenty-first century economy continues to pose a challenge for Nigeria. But the government has made rehabilitating the transport network a matter of urgent priority, and working in cooperation with the private sector, hopes to bring about significant progress in the sector in the near future.

A framework for progress

Recognising that years of mismanagement under nationalisation had left the transport sector in disarray, the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) in 2000 set up the Transport Sector Implementation Committee to formulate a new strategy for the sector. With the help of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), several bills were developed to create a framework for reform in the sector: the Railway Bill; the National Inland Waterways Bill; the Federal Roads Authority Bill; the National Roads Fund Bill; the National Transport Commission Bill and the Ports and Harbour Reform Bill. In 2008, these bills were approved by the NCP and should soon be presented to the National Assembly for passage into law.
