Partnering with the Private Sector
Public private partnerships create paths for development
Nigeria’s government recognises that in order to revamp the transport sector, cooperation with the private sector will be needed. In 1999, the government set up the National Council of Privatisation (NCP) to help carry out the transfer of hitherto inefficiently run public enterprises to the private sector. The NCP is responsible for drawing up and approving privatisation policies, while the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) implements policy.
To facilitate the development of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the infrastructure sphere, in 2008 the government established the Infrastructure Concession and Regulatory Commission (ICRC). Headed by former interim President Ernest Shonekan, the body will seek to engage the private sector in partnerships for the construction and maintenance of roads, airports, ports, energy plants and other public infrastructure. ...
